For thousands of years, First Nations peoples have used stories as tools for recording and sharing their history, knowledge and culture – a rich history of storytelling carefully preserved and practised today across the page and screen.
Sit down for an in-depth conversation with First Nations writers and filmmakers as they share how storytelling can empower truth-telling and reflection. Moderated by Screen Queensland’s Head of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Program Danielle Ah Boo – join Warren Mundine (activist) Tanith Glynn-Maloney (Finding Jedda, Robbie Hood), Benjamin Southwell (Dead Creek), Dena Curtis (Grace Beside Me, We Are Still Here) and Mykaela Saunders (Always Will Be) – as they discuss how narratives told across a variety of mediums and genres can allow for truth-telling and reflection. Unpacking why scripted stories might be uniquely positioned to confront Australia's past and how the practice of truth-telling manifests in each panellist's work.
This panel promises an insightful exploration of fiction’s unique ability to confront established “truths,” and uncover our country's ignored perspectives and dialogues on history.
