Monsters Down Under will explore the terrifying intersection of Australian wildlife and horror films, examining how iconic creatures—such as spiders, crocodiles, and other animals—are transformed into cinematic monsters that emphasise themes of survival and primal fear.
Kiah Roache-Turner will join us to discuss his film Sting, which dives into the fear of spiders. Special effects artist Steve Boyle from Formation Effects will contribute his expertise in creature design, providing insight into how these animals are brought to life as horrifying, on-screen predators.
Acclaimed director Richard E. Williams, whose 2025 film Dead Eyes uses the Australian environment to evoke fear in a uniquely atmospheric way, will share his perspective on harnessing the natural landscape to heighten tension and terror. This session promises to uncover the psychological horror rooted in Australia’s unique environment.
